The Power of Listening in Politics: In this paper, I explore the profound impact of listening in politics, with a focus on the film "Lincoln" (2012). I argue that listening isn't just an action but a cornerstone of human development, crucial for societal well-being. I explore the concept of holistic listening, emphasizing its role in meeting societal needs and fostering collaborative solutions. Drawing examples from the film, particularly Lincoln's interactions, I highlight the significance of listening in effective leadership. I discuss collective listening, stressing the importance of visionary leadership for inclusive dialogue and persuasion. In this paper, I introduce generative listening, suggesting that unbiased, attentive listening is essential for addressing deep-seated societal issues like racial inequality. By connecting the film's narrative with contemporary political challenges, I advocate for a shift towards a listening-first approach in political discourse. I argue that genuine healing and progress can only occur through empathetic understanding and collective collaboration. Through a blend of scholarly references and film analysis, I aim to articulate the transformative potential of listening in shaping political outcomes and societal values.
